| Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) |
|
Resistance education is the
cornerstone of our drug education program. When D.A.R.E. is coupled with
Community Policing, officer/child relationships are built which
otherwise may never occur; positive interaction make lasting impressions
on at-risk children.
The Mansfield Division of Police
proves D.A.R.E. to every fifth grader in the Mansfield City Schools.
D.A.R.E. principles are reinforced throughout the year through D.A.R.E.
activities and the D.A.R.E. officer's participation at various school
events.
One of the unique features of
D.A.R.E. is the use of police officers as instructors. Officer Jack
Shay, selected for this "classroom beat" has been carefully screened,
and has been selected for his abilities in human relations and
communications.
The D.A.R.E. curriculum focuses on
four major areas: providing accurate information about alcohol and
drugs; teaching students decision making skills; showing them how to
resist peer pressure; and helping them develop alternatives to drug use.
Recent studies have found that
children who have been through the D.A.R.E. program are less likely to
get involved in alcohol and drug abuse. In Ohio, a large majority of
teachers say D.A.R.E. has made a difference in student's attitude toward
drugs.
