Awards
The City of Mansfield has earned
many awards and recognition over the years and this is a reflection of how quickly our
community is mobilizing as one unit. In June of 1996, we won the City Livability Award by
highlighting the Richland Carrousel District. The award is sponsored by the United States
Mayor's Conference, and by Waste Management, Inc., North America's leading solid waste
management and recycling services company. The City Livability Award honors mayors for
developing effective urban programs that enhance livability and for exemplary leadership
in developing and implementing programs that improve the quality of life in American
cities.
In August 1996, we were listed in
the book, 50 Fabulous Places to Raise Your Family. In April, The Ohio Department of
Natural Resources named us a 1996 Tree City, U.S.A.. This program recognizes communities
that are effectively managing public tree resources and encourages the implementation of
community tree management. In December, The National Association of Home Builders rated
Mansfield in the nation's top 25 for most affordable U.S. housing.
Tree City USA Award - 2000
The City of Mansfield was honored
with the Tree City USA Award in April for the 6th consecutive year. This award is
sponsored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and the
National Arbor Day Foundation. Mansfield was selected for this national recognition for
effectively managing its public tree resources and maintaining community tree management
in the City. According to John Rosenow, the National Arbor Day Foundation President, a
community's tree planting program is a living memorial to the citizens' concern for the
quality of life in their city. The trees planted and cared for today will increase
property values, cool and beautify our cities, fight pollution, conserve energy and give
wildlife a home for years to come.
Shade Tree Commissions and their
communities must meet four standards: (1) have an established legal tree governing body,
(2) maintaining a comprehensive community forestry program, (3) maintaining a tree care
ordinance and (4) have an Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation.
The City of Mansfield's Shade Tree
Commission members are appointed by the Mayor. Shade Tree Commission members are Larry
Linn, Chairman; Bill Schulz, Sylvia Kolunie, Doug Versaw, City Council, and F.L.
"Bud" Fisher, Public Works Director. The Shade Tree Commission is responsible
for advising and recommending to the Mayor and Mansfield City Council, any program or
action plan that is determined to be necessary or advisable for the conservation, care and
planting of trees, plant or shrubs in the public ways, streets and alleys.
