Fair Housing Commission
Mansfield / Shelby /Richland County
What is the Fair Housing Commission?
The first Fair Housing
Ordinance was passed by the City of Mansfield in 1968. On December 6, 1977, the ordinance
was amended to provide for the establishment of a seven member Commission. Four members
are appointed by the Mayor, with the consent of City Council, while three members are
appointed by the Richland County Commissioners.
An agreement was
executed January 8, 1995 between the City of Mansfield and the City of Shelby provides
Fair Housing education and assistance to persons residing in or seeking housing within the
corporation limits. The Commission's duties include receiving, investigating and making
determinations upon written charges filed by citizens or groups who encounter practices
prohibited by the Fair Housing Laws. By utilizing the Fair Housing Commmision (FHC), a
home purchaser or renter does not have to confront a possible housing discrimination
problem alone.
There are local, state
and federal laws which protect your rights to housing accommodations both in the sale and
rental of housing. If you are faced with discrimination based on your race, color,
religion, national origin, ancestry, age, familial or marital status while seeking a place
to live, you can obtain help by calling the Fair Housing Commission of Richland County.
Fair Housing Laws have been passed by local, state, and federal governments so that you
may be assisted if housing discrimination occurs.
