Waste Water Treatment Plant

Sampling

An automatic sampler is used to sample from the influent channel just upstream of the bar screen.

Final Effluent is sampled after all treatment units just prior to discharge to Rocky Fork of the Mohican River.

Both influent and effluent are 24 hour period composite samples proportionate in volume to the wastewater flow rate at the time of sampling and representative of the facility’s overall performance.  Samplers have refrigeration units that maintain sample temperature at 4 degrees C.

The plant operator collects samples from the automatic samplers at approximately 6:30 AM by replacing the filled containers (plastic) with clean containers and transporting samples directly to the laboratory.  Samples are allowed to stand at room temperature while calibration checks are performed.  Analysis begins at 7:30 AM.

The plant operator performs grab sampling during the mid morning.  Samples are collected in plastic bottles for direct transport to the laboratory.  Samples for pH, dissolved oxygen and chlorine residual (summer only) are tested immediately.  Samples for fecal coliform are collected in a sterilized glass bottle containing a drop of 10% sodium thiosulfate solution.  Testing is initiated shortly thereafter.

Processed sludge for the required Sludge Characteristic Report is collected during a normal 8 hour run of the solids processing unit by the filter building operator and transported directly to the laboratory where lab technicians perform required tests.

Processed sludge tests for heavy metals and other required parameters are performed from 24-hour composite sample.

Receiving streams – upstream of effluent discharge at South Illinois Avenue Bridge and downstream of effluent discharge at State Route 39 Bridge are collected as grab samples (one per month) and tests performed shortly thereafter.

All the wastewater and processed sludge samples which are transported to a commercial laboratory for special tests (Cyanide, Volatile Organics, etc.) are handled using sample preservation procedures, container materials and maximum allowable holding times required by state and federal laws.

Sample bottles are permanently labeled for their appropriate use.

Chain of custody bench sheets are used between Wastewater Treatment Plant and commercial laboratory.
