City of Mansfield Water
Repair Department
2000 Overview
The year 2000 was a
very busy year for the Water Repair Department; installing new water lines in the South
Boulevard and Coolridge Heights areas, repairing water breaks and buying new and safer
equipment.
During the year,
contractors placed new mains in the South Boulevard, Coolridge Heights, Ruth Avenue and
Arnold Street areas. Water crews worked, in between the 110 main breaks that occurred
during the year, to change over nearly 200 taps to the new water mains. All the taps in
the South Boulevard area, have been changed over.
A new boring machine
was purchased. A hydraulic ram used for pushing and pulling pipe under roadways also was
purchased. In September and November of 1999, 157 taps were completed. Over 200 new
construction taps were done ranging from 3/4" to 8". These varied from
residential taps to fire line taps in the industrial parks.
During 2000, a new
procedure was started of issuing boiling advisories. This is a new procedure required by
the State of Ohio EPA when we have a depressurization in our system. We issued 35 boil
advisories with the EPA and they all passed with no positive tests. We sent a mailer with
the water bills to better inform the public about boiling advisories. With the help of the
news media, positive results occurred.
A grant from the Bureau
of Workers Compensation was obtained to buy new safety equipment. Two new ergonomic jack
hammers that relieve stress to the wrist and arms and reduce the chance of Carpal Tunnel
Syndrome were purchased. A valve exerciser that will be used to exercise the main line
valves in the distribution system was also purchased. It is used to exercise a main line
valve to reduce the risk of injury and also equipment failure. An exercising program was
implemented and this equipment was used extensively. This will help reduce the valves that
fail when shut downs are done for breaks. We replaced 22 valves and 4 were repaired during
the past year.
Over 1800 line
locations for contractors were performed. This shows that the Ohio Utility Protection
Service works for the City of Mansfield.
Other activities
included replacing 226 curb boxes for Utility Collections, repairing 246 lawns that were
torn up on main breaks or other repairs and responding to 40 rusty water calls that were
caused by hydrant flushing or from breaks.
We want to continue
providing quality service for the citizens of Mansfield. With new training of current
supervisors and staff, and their commitment to quality service, the City will continue
giving the Mansfield community excellent service.
