City of Mansfield Water Treatment Plant

Existing Well Supply History

The first supply system, that operated in 1872, consisted primarily of obtaining water directly from Rocky Fork Creek and pumping it through cast iron pipe into the system by a steam driven pump. No treatment was provided for the creek water and there was no storage on the system. After a few years and many complaints about water quality, the source of supply was changed to nearby Johns' Spring and the Laird Spring. A pipe was laid from Laird Spring to a 1,000,000 gallon reservoir constructed at Johns' Spring. The water at this site flowed into the reservoir bottom. The existing pumps took suction directly from the reservoir and in November, 1879, the residents of Mansfield were supplied with pure spring water.

Early records indicate that the facility, known as the North Main Street Station, was in operation until 1896. At this time, deep wells were drilled at the location and the water supply was directed to sub-surface aquifers. In 1910 the Hedges Station was developed, followed by the first well in Maxwell Field in 1919. These facilities were expanded through the years. According to a report prepared for the City by George B. Gascoigne and Associates in the year 1937, the facilities consisted of the following:

North Main Street Station - Located in the northern portion of the City and supplied by three wells located about one mile apart in the Rocky Fork and Touby Run drainage basin. These wells, known as "Longview Well", "Brooker Well" and "Station Well", delivered water by gravity discharge to a small wet well which was interconnected to an open reservoir. The high service station pumps discharged directly to the distribution system.

Hedges Station - Located in the east portion of the City in Rocky Fork Valley. Consisted of two wells, which pumped directly into the distribution system. Used primarily to maintain adequate pressure during periods of high demands. more...
